Yoga on the Pier

Six Sessions from - Wednesday 3rd July - Wednesday 7th August from 8.00am - 9.00am

Join local senior yoga teacher, Helen McCabe, for these weekly Wednesday morning yoga sessions on the beautiful location of Swanage pier this summer. These hour long sessions will be gentle guided flow classes suitable for all levels and will include an introduction to simple breathing techniques, some standing and seated postures and a guided relaxation. Anyone can benefit from the simple tools of yoga, which can be a wonderful practice for general wellbeing. Regular practice can develop strength, stability, flexibility and, ultimately, a calm mind.

All levels and abilities welcome. Not suitable for children.

These classes will take place outdoors, on the pier itself, with the beautiful views of Swanage Bay as our backdrop. The nature of the location, however, does mean that the floor surface is not as even as an indoor floor, which you need to be mindful of. Please dress in clothes that are comfortable to move about in. We are also exposed to the elements and hopefully will be blessed with warm sunny mornings, but do please come prepared with layers for extra warmth and hat / sun screen, as appropriate for the weather. Yoga is traditionally practiced barefoot so a mat is essential. If you prefer to wear suitable outdoor fitness shoes that is also OK. Please bring a yoga mat or let us know in advance if you need to borrow one. You may also like to bring a cushion to sit on and a blanket or shawl for the relaxation at the end. If the weather is too wet, wild and woolly the class will be cancelled and we will let you know / post this on the Swanage Pier website/Facebook page.

Cost : £6.50 per person per session or £30.00 for the six week block
booking essential due to limited numbers.

Creative Writing and Poetry on the Pier - The Sea

Tuesday 30th July

10.30am-12.00pm

Join us to celebrate National Marine Week with Jurassic Coast (UNESCO World Heritage Site) poet-in-residence, Sarah Acton for a gentle morning of creative writing and poetry on the pier. We will take the sea as our theme, using the very special vantage position of Swanage Pier to connect our writing to the coastal landscape, using memory and imagination to travel in time and over miles. We’ll see Swanage and the local seascape from the pier’s-eye-view, working with the outdoor creative process and nature to inspire and stimulate. With readings, prompts and reflection, we will write and share sea-inspired words. All levels and abilities welcome.

These walking workshops take place outdoors, walking at a slow and gentle pace along the pier with seating and frequent rest stops on route. Please dress for the weather and bring a pencil and paper to write on. You may also like to bring a cushion. If the weather is too wild and woolly to hold onto our paper and pens, we will move indoors and use the classroom.

Cost: £10.00 per person

As part of National Marine Week Litter Free Coast and Sea will be outside of Marine Villas promoting their campaign called 'Love our Beach'

Litter Free Coast and Sea are running a 2 year campaign called ‘Love our Beach’ to encourage people to reduce the amount of Fats, oils and greases going down their drains and highlighting other ways we can all help improve bathing water quality at our beaches. We will be promoting the campaign at the event with our interactive waterflow exhibit, displays and storytelling with Martin Maudsley.

Litter Free Coast and Sea is an ongoing campaign to reduce the social, economic and environmental impacts of marine and beach litter, and improve and maintain bathing water quality along the Dorset and East Devon coast by preventing litter from getting to our coast in the first place.

It is supported and promoted by over 500 local organisations and individuals up and down the coast. All supporters want a litter free coast and sea, act in ways that will help achieve this and encourage other people to do so.
