Online Series of Talks

Due to the positive feedback received from previous online talks, Swanage Pier have immense pleasure in announcing a series of five talks about the wildlife, geology, and coastal history around the Purbeck Coast. These will be held on the last Thursday of the month, starting at 19:30. Each talk will last approximately 40 minutes and there will be the facility to ask questions.

The talks will take place via an online platform, please register for the talk you wish to attend and login details will be sent out a week prior to the talk.

Suggested donation of £5.00 per talk

Thursday 28th January – Wildlife under the Pier

Swanage Pier creates a unique set of conditions which allow a huge diversity of wildlife to live underneath it. Pier volunteer and local diver, Nick Reed, will take us on a journey through this unseen world and will give us the background to some of the amazing creatures that featured in the successful online exhibition of underwater images by Alison and Paul Pettit.

Thursday 25th February – Geology from the Pier

Standing at the end of the pier you are treated to a fantastic view of part of England’s only natural World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast. As your gaze sweeps from Old Harry Rocks round to Peveril Point you take a travel through time - sixty million years in sixty seconds! Pier volunteer, Nick Reed, will take you on a virtual tour of this unique geology.

Thursday 25th March – History of Swanage Pier part 2

Back by popular demand, March’s talk will explore the history of Swanage Pier from the building of Marine Villas through to the recent renovation. The talk will look at how the piers developed, their demise and the resurrection of the new pier.

Thursday 29th April – “Old London by the Sea”

Thanks to the Victorian entrepreneurs, George Burt and John Mowlem, Swanage has a unique collection of ephemera from London. The talk will look at the history of these objects and how they got to Swanage. After the talk you are guaranteed to view our lovely town with new eyes!

Thursday 27th May – The Kyarra

Lying on the seabed about a mile off the coast is the wreck of the Kyarra. Arguably one of the most famous wrecks on the South Coast. The display of artefacts from this vessel is one of the most popular exhibits in the Pier visitor centre. Pier volunteer and diver, Nick Reed, will tell the story of the fantastic time capsule and the role she played in WW1.
